Youth Advisory Council

The aim of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is to create a mutually respectful partnership with young people within Hedland communities to enable young people’s ideas, skills, perspectives and contributions to better inform the Town of Port Hedland on youth related matters. The Town of Port Hedland invites YAC members to a range of Town functions.

We're looking for people who have the following qualities, interests and backgrounds:

  • be aged between 15 and 24 years at the age of application
  • live within the Town of Port Hedland
  • be involved in the local community, for example involved in sporting clubs, community groups or volunteering
  • have an interest in wellbeing, community services youth events and activities, leadership and helping other young people in the community
  • have the ability to work in a team, respect others and participate in group discussions as well as working independently
  • have an ability to think about the big picture
  • bring motivation, willingness, and commitment to participate on an ongoing basis
  • have good communication skills – should language barriers occur; the Town of Port Hedland is able to assist
  • be willing to be actively involved in conversations and contribute to discussions in a variety of environments and platforms
  • prepared to undertake some training

What else is really important?

We acknowledge and value the diversity of our young people in our community. As such Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Culturally diverse, People with disability, LGBTIQA+ and lived experience representation is encouraged.  

Access to the internet and phone is important but we may be able to help with a place where you can access these resources

Time commitment

In between face-to-face meetings once a month, contact will be maintained through email predetermined social media platforms. It is expected that you maintain contact with other member of the YAC and employees of the Town of Port Hedland.

Successful applicants can sit on the Youth Advisory Council for a maximum period of 2 years, served consecutively.

Only complete nominations that meet the requirements will be considered. Nominations close on 3 March 2023.

Nominations will be assessed after the closing date and all nominees will be advised of their nomination outcome.
